Ryan Smyth traded

Smyth for Nilsson, O'Marra, and NYI's 2007 1st.

On value, for a 20 game rental, this is fantastic value for the Edmonton Oilers. I was a hug fan of O'Marra at the 2005 draft (I'll have to look it up, but I'm pretty sure I had him 7th or 8th overall that year). I'd imagine Nilsson goes straight to Edmonton, O'Marra is still in the CHL but he's already signed his 3 year rookie deal, so there is no re-entry worry with O'Marra. O'Marra seems like a player MacT would particularly like, but I guess we'll see, and who knows how long it will take until he's ready to be a contributor. I hate cheering against Smyth, but a guy has to hope NYI goes into the tank the rest of the way to improve that draft pick.

But, man, it hurts.

I'll be providing very brief commentary on most of the deadline deals at my old site, leaving room at the top of the page here to comment on any Oilers deals that may go down today.

Like I said at LT's..

1) How is Okposo not in this trade and how is THIS the best available deal?

2) Why on earth are we not talking about Jussi and Sykora being dealt as well?

O'Marra has never put up numbers in the OHL. Never. I have no idea why you like the guy speeds. Maybe you've got something else?

Nilsson is now 22 and still can't break 1 PPG in the AHL. On top of that he's a midget.

Smyth got traded for a grab bag of shit including a 1st round pick that is a rapidly depreciating asset because the Oilers just gave them Smyth and MAB for nothing off their playing roster.

Dealing exclusively with the Isles is bad enough, but not getting Tambellini, their only remaining prospect with any kind of track record is absolutely abysmal. This is an awful deal.

Ya, terrible trade. Not as bad as the Pronger deal, but close.

What would Joffrey Lupul have fetched in trade today? Maybe a 2nd round draft pick? Maybe a late first rounder in this weak draft.

Would Smid have been enough to rent Souray for the next 20 games? Maybe. Maybe not. His value is in that range though.

Personally I don't think that the Oilers had any intention of signing Smyth and the "last minute negotiations breakdown" was just for show. I don't think that they have any intention of pursuing him (or any other expensive UFA) in the summer either. Though I'm sure that they will pretend otherwise.

Nichols wasn't kidding. If the EIG don't get a new stadium the Oilers payroll will continue to drop relative to the league.

C'est la vie.

Smyth was still a UFA. The oilers got a good return on him if they knew he wasn't coming back at all, I'm not sure how the Isles could have reasonably been expected to give up more for a UFA when they're uncertain they'd ever make the playoffs.

I'm not sure you can compare it to the Pronger deal really.
Lupul, Smid, 27-30th overall pick, 57-60th overall pick...

O'Marra, Nilsson, 15th overall pick.

It's hard to say which package is better, but considering Pronger was a)the better player b)signed for 5 years to a c)very good contract, I think the Oilers made out quite well in comparison to the CFP trade.

RiversQ: I don't like O'Marra as much now as I did at the draft, no question, but what dcan you say. I was just saying he's a guy I liked a bunch at the time of the draft, we'll see how he progresses going forward but certainly his offence hasn't progressed as expected on draft day. In some ways a guy could liken this deal to the TB Hamrlik deal. Did EDM get the 2 busted 1st rounders foisted upon them this time, instead of vice versa? Seems to me these guys are a bit younger than Kelly and Bonsignore were, I guess time will tell.

During the press conference Lowe mentioned that the Oilers liked both guys in their draft (I know, they say this every time they get a young guy). Lowe also mentioned that they even tried to trade up for one of them, I believe this player to be O'Marra. There were rumors att the 2005 draft that EDM and FLA had struck a deal for the 7th OV pick, provided the player FLA liked wasn't still available at #7. Suprisingly Olesz slid down to #7, so FLA didn't make the deal and selected Olesz, but I do think had the trade gone thru EDM would have selected O'Marra at that slot.

Kevin Lowe is the college student that waits until the last day before starting his essay and then stays up all night trying to write something, anything to avoid flunking out. It's no wonder the team hasn't improved at all in his 7 year tenure.

If he's going to sell Ryan Smyth then he should have made up mind early enough that he could get more offers on the table. I heard that there were a bunch of GMs that didn't even know that Smyth was availible. That reeks of a panic trade to me.

Also if you are going to sell, then you know....sell. What the hell are all the other UFAs still doing on the roster? It would have been better to get something, anything for them if you are selling off your top goal scorer.

Hopefully the Oilers tank next season, draft Tavares and fire Lowe. It seems like the Oilers will be perpetually stuck in rebuild mode or going into the season with glaring holes as long as Lowe runs the franchaise.

(a) Tavares is in the 2009 draft

(b) no argument, if you sell, you should sell. I don't know how set BUF was on Zubrus, but maybe that was a destination for Sykora and Markkanen?

"if you sell, you should sell"

See that's my beef. If you're shipping off Smyth, then you're basically conceding that this season's a bust. Thus, winning even one more game in the current campaign shouldn't matter. So you should try to purge anything that doesn't fit in the long term and anyone that was overpaid during the two month panic attack you had after Pronger demanded a trade.

Sending off one guy right now, who may or may not be the keystone of your number one line, isn't doing the job if you're SELLERS mode. If you're managing a team I feel there should be very concise and clear vision for the direction your club is taking. Right now the Oilers' vision is a cluster fuck. A whole lot of if's and maybe's, and quite possibly, the largest collective wealth of future bottom twelve talent ever assembled with one organization.

Sykora wants to stay - that's more than we can say about Smyth tonight given the amount of money he left on the table - so that's why the Czech is still here. Jussi is a cheap effective backup and may also be in our short-term plans. JDD has become an average AHL goalie after 2 years of "bust" - but that's not good enough to get the job done in the NHL - he needs more time to develop and may never be ready for even backup duties. DD is also too young period - so we still need a good back up - even more so next year with Roloson a year older. Tjarnqvist is on the IR with a chronic injury and Nedved, Winchester are valueless - better players are available for free on waivers - they would have been gone if anyone wanted them.
