"Whoop-dee-doo, what does it all mean, Basil?"

I'm not sure.

One possibility is that Greene might be out of here as well before next season starts. I don't see how EDM can possibly run with Smid, Greene, and Grebeshkov playing next year, but that depends on the game of Grebeshkov as well as the perceived growth in Smid and Greene's games by the decision making staff of the Oilers.

This might also spell the end of Tjarnqvist's stay in EDM, but I will believe that one when I see it because, to me, Tjarnqist has played pretty decently when healthy. I really doubt if this year has played his value upwards, so if EDM likes what they saw, and don't see his injury as a long term problem (they might) Tjarnqvist seems to me like a guy you can bring back as a UFA and perhaps get a good deal.

There is also the possibility that they simply think, for next year and beyond, Grebeshkov will be better than Bergeron so why not?

I could see them moving any or all of Smith, Tjarnqvist, and Hejda at the deadline, but I could also see them keeping all 3 and moving Greene, either now or in the summer, and going with a D of:

I don't see as much of a possibility of them going with this defence next season:

But stranger things have happened, I'm sure.

Any other wild possibilities here on anyone's mind?

If we start next season with Greene, Smid and Grebeshkov I'm going to kill someone. Seriously.

The firesale has begun (up next, Sykora and Jussi, possibly one or both of Hejda and Tjarnqvist as well).

It's going to be a long spring and a longer summer.

I bet they deal Matt Greene this week. Throw him in with a forward and giddy-up. Thank goodness, help is coming.

I'm with LT. Greene and one of Torres or Lupul.

It just has to be done, it makes space for the team to sign Smyth and makes us better on the backend.

I just pray it's Lupul and not Torres.

If you made a move something like Greene, Lupul + ??? (if needed, of course) for a great young D, then sign a guy like Dvorak (or Dvorak himself) for, say, 1.5 mil, you probably end up better both on RW and on D while saving money.

Something like that would make sense to me LT.

Yeah. I can see LA, PHI and PHX being candidates for a deal. I don't know that you can get a D now on any club that has a sniff of a chance but those 3 teams have some nice things.

PDO: Agree on Jussi, time to send him away.

Lupul has to go.

And Speeds, I'll take door #1 for next year's D please.

If I were GM:

I'd be willing to give Lupul one more full season as an Oiler before I made a final judgement on him. As pathetically soft as he can be I don't get the impression he's lazy and as many more goals we'd hoped for I still get the impression he will score a lot someday. I would want one more full NHL season to gauge how likely, how soon, and in what contexts his offensive ability is to outperform his defensive shortcomings. In addition, I've never liked the optics of trading a promising player so soon after his acquisition and didn't think NHL GMs did either until recently with Stuart and now Grebeshkov.

I would absolutely keep Smith, Staios, and Hejda. Shaggy can stay if and only if it is judged he is likely to stay healthy. In a season that was cast to the wayside it may even be a blessing in disguise that injury left him with so little opportunity to increase his contract value.

At this point you've got to pick your poison with the kids. Does Smid get the same preference next year as he did this season? Do the limited years Edmonton have control of Greene mean he is dealt? Does Grebeshkov make Edmonton's NHL roster or does he play in Russia?

Unless Greene is part of a deal or Edmonton is eyeing a major trade or UFA I can see this being a question right up until October begins. I hope I'm wrong but where others have chosen this trade as a signal that next year's cavalry is on it's way shortly, this time when Lowe says a D-trade is unlikely I can't help but believe it.

Greene, I think, will be gone. There is no better/cheaper veteran UFA replacement for Gator out there, so he is still a lock for the 1st RD slot. Staios will get the 2nd RD slot.

They need a vet RD to platoon with either Gilbert or Roy (two guys with the skillset the team needs more of).

On the LD, well -- they still need the #1 pairing guy (UFA). We've endured Smid this long, so he probably gets to stay. He's played too many games this year, had tha bad middle stretch, but seems to be improving.

So Tjarnquist, Hejda as the older more experienced options. Syvret, Gresbaschov, Chorney as the prospect options. I think you need one of Tjarnquist and Hejda, but probably not both. If Tjarnquist is going to be long-term healthy, he is the better option. Else, Hejda.

Mode #1: "Rookie Left-Side"
UFA#1 - Smith
Tjarnquist - Staios
Smid/Grebeshkov - UFA#2

extras: Smid/Gresbeshkov - Gilbert

Mode #2: "Rookie Right-Side + Road Mode"
UFA#1 - Smith
Smid - Staios
Tjarnquist - UFA#2/Gilbert

extras: Gresbeshkov - UFA#2/Gilbert

That's a setup that allows them to ice 1 rookie a night. They'd probably need to carry 8 D and just 1 spare F, but that strikes me as a decent balance.

I'd like to see next season:

That's if they want to be a contender. They'll need a top pairing guy and a guy who can play the PP and bring some backside offense. That is probably hoping for too much though. Probably the best we'll see is one UFA signing. If thats the case I'd rather see Hejda stay then Tjarnqvist.

Daniel "Mr.Glass" Tjarnqvist hasn't played 70+ games in each of the last 3 seasons, and he's softer then charmin when he is playing. The whole point in signing veterans on the D-core is to bring the Oilers closer to championship calibre, but they never will be with Tjarnqvist in the top four so why bother.

Maybe they should just go:

....and win the Tavares sweepstakes. It'd probably make the Oilers a better team in the long run.

To me it's looking more and more like Greene is the odd man out - his skill set as a stay at home tough guy is replicated by older less mistake prone vets and our young puck movers are more valuable. But the other guy who may be moved is Smid - it will take another 3-4 years before he does ANYTHING and that is out of step with the young forwards like Hemmer, Stoll, Torres, Lupul, MAP and JFJ who should be on a mission in 08-09. If Gilbert shows well (and he did tonight) and Grebs is a player - then moving Greene and Smid to get us a better young veteran presence in the top 4 defense makes a ton of sense.

Two things are certain - we need to get better and older on defense - and we need to get bigger and better at forward. Here is a 07-08 lineup that I would like:

Smyth Stoll Hemsky (a shooter and tipster with Hemsky - solid at ES as well)
Moreau Horcoff Pisani (killer ES line - Horcoff can feed Pisani while Moreau works the boards)
Torres MAP Lupul (soft minute shooters getting fed by MAP)
JFJ Reasoner Stortini (hitting something every shift)

Pitkanen / Smith (Smid and Greene traded for Pitkanen)
Staios / Gilbert
Hejda / Grebs / Shaggy or UFA vet

Roloson / JDD
