Prospect Signing Deadline looms

With 5 pm ET, June 1st as the deadline to sign many of the prospects drafted in 2005 or earlier, the Oilers have some decisions to make on the following players:

2003:

Zhukov (I believe the Oilers have to decide on him, because I think he was drafted out of Sweden, not Russia)
Olsson
Umicevic
Hrabel

2004:

Bjurling (he may already be off the reserve list, I'm not certain)

2005:

Pettersson

McDonald and Rohlfs have to be signed this summer as well, but their deadline is August 15th. Paukovich, Chorney, Dee, VandeVelde, Glasser, Petry and Wild are all still in college, and are therefore retained on EDM's reserve list. Pitton, the only CHL player EDM has left (wow, is that low?), needs to be given a "bona-fide" offer for his rights to be retained, which I would guess EDM will make.

So, any thoughts on which player(s) the Oilers should sign from that list of six?

Myself, I'd imagine Umicevic, Hrabel, and Pettersson would be the ones most likely to be signed.

However given the news on the Umicevic and Pettersson, maybe none of them will be signed? Hrabel sounds kind of interesting but there hasn't been much buzz around him from Prendergast whenever I've heard him talk prospects, on Guy's show or on the Oilers website.

In that I know absolutely nothing about Zhukov (other than presumably his last name) he's probably not worth keeping. (good attitude I've got, eh?)

Olsson doesn't seem impressive enough write-up or stats wise to warrant signing IMO.

Trogdor is the most appealing to me, followed by Pettersson. Again, I don't know too much about Hrabel but I think I remember somewhere that he may have impressed at camp last fall?

With the Oilers supposedly near their limit for contracts and none of these players looking like they're irreplaceable I wonder if they're pretty far down on Lowe's priority list.

I don't know much about these guys. Hrabel and Pettersson sound like legitimate options though. Particularly the latter - he's AHL eligible this year right?

Petterssen is 5-10, 185 and averaged close to a ppg at 19 in the WHL. He ranked barely in the top SEVENTY in total points and I counted 6 defensemen who had more points. I understand he was injured but good grief he doesn't seem like much to me.

Trogdor is a "tweener" to me, if the Oilers had fewer prospects maybe but it's probably best to let him go. A smart team would pick him up though, because he's not a terrible bet (and neither was Salmelainen btw).

Hrabel's stats tell us he can play. I'd sign him and let the others go.

None of the above - why bother - if we want a Euro we can get a UFA as good or better any time we want. We should sign Rohlfs and Micky D and call it a summer - many bigger fish to fry.

Well according to a thread at HF, Petterssen has signed in Sweden for this next season, leaving Umicevic and Hrabal as the two potentially useful players on the list. Combine this with Guy Flaming's hint-dropping regarding letting a second player walk (I'm not saying who but good money says he burninates) and it looks like Hrabal is the only one left on the radar. He's behind an awful lot of defensive depth - do you folks figure they sign him?

I don't really see any way to project that one showerhead.

We simply haven't heard them talk about him enough. His numbers certainly look good enough to consider signing him. EDM has a bunch of decent D prospects bubbling under, but some of them could easaily be moved, besides which not all of them are in the pros yet.

Staios
Greene
Smid
Gilbert
Roy
Grebeshkov
Peckham
Bisaillon (He's signed, right?)

They have room to fit Hrabel in, if they so choose. They'll keep 7 in the NHL, 9 signed already but a bunch of them are ticketed for the AHL.

Well I think that it could be projected if we had August 1st's information before June 1st arrives. By this I mean it's likely that the number of defensemen above Hrabel in the depth chart will change between now and then, whether it's a quantity for quality trade, an FA signing, or whatever. We don't necessarily know what Lowe intends to do though so hmmm. I read on HF that apparently Hrabel had a great camp? Are there press clippings from back then that could be looked at?

By the way, thanks for spelling it out like you have. With a need for 7 NHL defensemen and the ability to place a few of those names listed in the AHL Edmonton's defensive depth isn't nearly as long of a list as I thought.

I just realized I forgot Young and Syvret as well.

Well yes, that's more depth but really how good is it Roy-Bisaillon? Peckham may have potential but if any members of that list actually stand in Hrabel's way then no, don't sign him.

The first six in speeds' list are either in Edmonton or out the door. That leaves just five for the AHL club, so I still don't see any particular reason why the Oilers should let a dman slip through their fingers if he's even close to Peckham, Bisaillon or Syvret.
