Quote of the Day

Dan Barnes has an excellent article in the journal today, a must read. There is a lot of good commentary in there, much of it from Horcoff, but this MacTavish quote is my favourite:
"We've got to help (Hemsky) along as a coaching staff and make sure he has the right guys to play with," said MacTavish. "Horc, I like him and Hemmer together and, hopefully, Penner is a fit for those guys. He looks to be. It would be nice to be able to have those three guys to match up against another team's top line, whether it's the Sedins or Thornton's line or any of the big lines in the game."
Stuff like this warms my heart. Not so much the content here, more the fact that the subject is being addressed and written about. I'm sure that this September is the first time that MacTavish has made any honest reference to matchups and the true roles of different players, both the forwards and the defence. Hopefully this is an indicator of things to come from the Edmonton media. Lord knows we all bitch enough about poor hockey reporting, it would be nice to be doing the opposite a bit more this season.

Heartwarming also for what it implies for line matches further down the forward depth. There will be pretty much a rookie on every other line. (Nillson on 2, Stortini and Brodziak on the 3/4).

Without Pisani, MacT couldn't have cobbled a checking line together if he wanted to.

Hopefully a renewed Moreau, Reasoner + Brodziak can take on some toughs (say Smyth-Stastny-Svatos as a frightening example, or Naslund-Morrison-Scrub).

That would leave Torres-Stoll-Nillson available to do some damage.

It would help a bunch if Reasoner could bounce back to pre-injury form. He's a good story, and seems like a good guy going by the mic'd bits, that's probably why myself and a lot of other Oiler fans have been uncharacteristically patient ... but damn, he just can't win puck battles any more. And he was as good with taking a pass off of skates as any Oiler before he got hurt (save Smyth and maybe Hemsky now). Not any more. Let's hope he turns it around ths season.

Vic, agreed.

Marty is all "Logan's Run" with the jewel in his palm starting to blink.

Unless he shows a major amount of utility -- he will lose our the ability to get a contract next year.

How sad of a statement is it that most of us consider Barnes the best of a terrible bunch when it comes to having a clue, yet just last week he was talking about how Horcoff would only be a "third line" centre. It's like I said at the time, count up his EV TOI at night's end and tell me who the third line centre is?

Maybe this "admission" by MacT was a way of helping along poor old Danny.

BTW, is anyone familiar with the story of the LA times sports columnists who was formerly a man but now lives as a woman? To look at the new picture is creepy and I was reminded of it the other day when I saw Joanne Ireland's headshot above her blog. I have every reason to believe that this is Jim Matheson trying out a new approach.
