Action Is Needed

This is just one of those cases where enough similar situations have gone wrong that I will not be content until pen gets put to paper.

Add Shawn Horcoff on July 1 to the list and we're together in the same boat.

I'm no CBA guru, but I'm under the impression that Pitkanen can't be signed until the new year, because he signed the one year contract. Either way, sign em both for at least well into their UFA timetable.

pdo - Horcoff has one more year after this or can they not negotiate an extension with him until July 1?

Black Dog, AFAIK we can't open negotiations for an extension until July 1.

25/5 and a NMC.

Thanks pdo

The way he's going it might take more then that.

Of course, he's no elite player.

Of course, he's no elite player.

I don't listen to much talk radio, but about a week ago I listened in for half an hour or so. It was the day that Rishaug slammed Lowetide for criticizing Stortini, though unfortunately I missed that bit.

In any case, Stauffer was blaming Oiler problems on the coaching, as he does. Rishaug was coming as close to criticizing Lowe as anyone does, he said he thought it was possible that the roster wasn't strong enough, leaving listeners to draw their own conclusions.

But the first caller in thought that the first step to fixing it was to ship Horcoff out of town and promote Gagner to the first line.

I think there is a reason that fans and media like Lowe and aren't pinning any blame on them. As slipper says, it's because they like his moves. I listened in after the Souray trade and was almost unanimously agreed that it was a terrific deal and that Souray was a bigger difference maker than Smyth.

Radio fans were stoked about the Penner deal as well. Loved the Nylander deal and were disgusted when it fell through. Most didn't like the Pitkanen trade, though I remember sphere commenter HBomb calling in with positivity.

So for most of the people around this part of Oiler fandom, those deals were loathed (except for the Garon and Pitkanen trades) and expectations were lower.

Go to HF, and similarly the preseason expectations were very high. And at a quick glance it looks like the current record is being blamed mostly on the coaching staff, then on injuries, and lastly on Lowe.

When it comes to assessing veteran defencemen, Lowe makes unpopular decisions that work. When it comes to assessing forwards, Lowe is Joe Fan. Therefore he's not going to be criticized much by Joe Fan.

It's as if Lowe can look at Pitkanen play, see who he was playing with and against, have a feel for the zone time, the scoring chances happening at either end of the rink ... and if the numbers are bad that year, it's easy for him to accept that he just had an unlucky year with the bounces. And now might be the time to 'buy low'.

But when he looks at forwards, it really seems that he can't see past the goals and assist totals on the scoresheet.

Well said Vic.

Souray doesn't fit the modus operandi, but I buy the rest of it.

Considering he locked up Pisani and Horcoff (two of the sphere's favs for their all around smarts) before trying to lock up Joe Fans favorite Smyth, I find that argument a little odd.

Even Joe Fan manages to get one right once in awhile. Smyth was a major mistake for the Oilers. Not just the deal - the whole 12 month episode.

Vic Ferrari - well said.

Please post more

Oilman - Pisani and his agent came to Lowe back in January of 2006, asking for 1.1M (they were using Chris Clark in Washington). Lowe and Howson rejected the offer, opting to wait until the season ended before making a decision. Pisani then cashed in after his playoff run, and you can bet the average Joe Fan was gushing over Pisani's playoff performance.

The mistake was not re-signing him back in January - even though, one can argue Pisani would not have been as motivated in the playoffs if he had a contract locked up.

those unsigned contracts really bite the Oilers in the ass a lot....Sounds like they could have had Pisani and Smyth for about the same money they're paying Souray this season. I'd never heard that $1.1mil figure.

That 1.1M figure is coming from Scott Howson himself, who was a guest speaker for a business negotiation class at the U of A.

He also claimed the Oilers caved into giving Laraque a 3 year contract because they didn't want to same effects of the Mike Comrie saga..

fascinating info on Pisani, and clearly from a solid source. Use this info responsibly, Lowe 'bashers' (is Stoll2Hemsky around here?) :P
